Consider the following questions for discussion and clarification as you look at a variety of Alex Janvier's art.
- Choose a few words to best describe the piece of art:
- What evidence can you give that his artwork is connected to the land?
- What story/ies are the pictures telling? How do I know?
- What colours, shapes and patterns do you see?
- Is the artist expressing a feeling or emotion? How does the painting make you feel?
- If you could walk into the painting, what sounds might you hear?

LESSON: The students will create their own artwork inspired by - not copying (using a different medium than Alex Janvier's).
Review the lesson about the difference between copying and being inspired by.
Preparation:
Cut watercolour paper into a large circle.
Creating:
1. Wash water over the watercolour paper to get it wet. Brush a colour of watercolour paint across the paper (you may want to sprinkle with salt to create more effect). Let dry.
2. Looking at the design created by the first wash. Use the lines to draw lines across the paper (you could use acrylic paints at this point to make brighter colours). Try NOT to overdo adding colours, but just highlight the lines going across with a flow. Let dry.
3. A final highlighting or adding detailed fine line maybe needed (but again do not do too much -leave some negative space as well).
